Frequently asked questions
Can I write an entry for yesterday?
No. You can only record the current day, and there is no date picker. Past entries can be read back from the calendar, but their content cannot be changed. The app is built around remembering one thing while the day is still fresh, rather than filling in a backlog later. An entry for the current day can still be edited or deleted after you save it.
Can I record more than one good deed a day?
One a day. Writing a second one replaces that day's entry rather than adding to it.
Is there a limit on the length of an entry?
Up to 100 characters. A count is shown under the text field, as "12 / 100". Hashtags are separate from the text, and there is no limit on how many you attach to one entry. On the free plan you can reuse up to 3 distinct hashtag words as often as you like; adding a 4th distinct word prompts you to upgrade to Pro. The one exception is a suggestion you accept as-is: the App quietly adds the text without the hashtag rather than showing the prompt, so that the easiest way in stays open.
I am not getting notifications
First check that "Daily reminder" is switched on under Settings > Reminder in the app. Then check that notifications are allowed for the app under Settings > Notifications > One Good Deed on your device. If they are not, the app's settings screen shows an "Open notification settings" button.
Note that reminders are scheduled about two weeks ahead at a time. If you do not open the app for more than two weeks, the schedule runs out and reminders stop, so please open the app once so it can reschedule them. If you have already recorded an entry for the day, that day's reminder is skipped.
Can I choose which days of the week to be reminded?
No. The reminder is once a day, every day, at the time you set. You can change the time under Settings > Reminder > Time.
Can I move my entries to a new device?
Yes, with Pro. Use Settings > Data > Export JSON to write your entries out as a file (JSON format), which you can then save or send from the share sheet. On the new device, use Settings > Data > Import JSON to load that file.
Importing replaces rather than merges. Everything already on that device is replaced by the contents of the file. Please take care if you have already recorded a few days on the new device.
Are my entries synced across devices?
No. The text of your entries and your hashtags are stored only on your device and are never sent to a server. Your settings are kept on the device too, although a few of them appear in the usage statistics described below. No account is required. To carry entries between devices, use the export and import described above (a Pro feature).
The app does send anonymous usage statistics to help us improve it — which features were used, along with counts. That includes a few setting values, such as the fact that you turned the reminder on and the time you set it to. It never includes the text of your entries or the content of your hashtags. See the Privacy Policy for details. Also note that if you have iCloud Backup switched on for the device itself, the app's data is included in that backup.
What happens to my data if I delete the app?
Every entry stored on the device is erased along with it, and we cannot recover it for you. If you want to keep anything, export it as a file before deleting (export is a Pro feature).
Can I delete a past entry?
Not individually. Only the current day's entry can be edited or deleted. To clear everything, use Settings > Reset > Delete all entries.
Can I change the colours?
With Pro, yes. Under Settings > Theme you can choose between four palettes — spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Turning on "Follow the season" switches them automatically according to the month. Light and dark appearance can be chosen on the same screen. Without Pro the app stays on the default spring palette in light appearance.
Does the home screen icon change with the season too?
Not by default. With Pro, the icon changes only when you turn on Settings > Theme > Change the app icon too, and it then follows whichever seasonal palette you are using. The palette and the icon are separate settings. Note that iOS shows an alert each time the icon changes to tell you it has changed.
I would like to try the app first
Tap "Explore with sample data" on the last page of the introduction, or use Settings > Data > Add sample data, to load example entries and try every screen. Sample data can be removed again from the same screen with "Remove sample data", and entries you wrote yourself are left untouched.
Can I show an entry to someone?
Yes. There is a share button on today's entry on the home screen, and another when you open a day from the calendar; both pass the text of that entry to the iOS share sheet, so you can send it to mail, messages, social apps, and so on. The recap screen also has a share button, but that one shares a summary of the month ("12 good deeds in July") rather than the text of any entry. There is no in-app feature for sharing entries with other users.
Where can I see my streak?
The Recap tab shows your current streak, your longest streak, and your total number of entries, and those are free to view. The by-tag breakdown for the month you are looking at, and the streak milestones, require Pro. The all-time count per hashtag is free to view from the “#” button at the top right of the home screen. Milestones for your total number of entries are not listed there; they appear as a celebration when you reach one.
Does my streak reset if I have not written today yet?
No. As long as you wrote yesterday, your streak keeps showing while today is still unwritten, and writing today adds one to it. If you miss a whole day, though, the streak breaks and starts again from one.
About One Good Deed Pro
What does Pro unlock?
The recap gains its by-tag breakdown and its list of streak milestones, and you can go back through past months instead of only the current one. You also get the seasonal palettes with a matching app icon, dark mode (appearance switching), and JSON export and import of your entries. The limit on how many distinct hashtag words you can use is also removed.
Without Pro you can still record every day, browse the whole calendar history, use the daily reminder, and share an entry. The recap still shows your current streak, your longest streak, and your total number of entries (for the current month only — past months are not available). Hashtags are limited to 3 distinct words, and the app stays on the spring palette in light appearance. Because the palette stays on spring, the mark that lights up on your calendar stays a cherry blossom all year.
What plans are there?
Monthly and yearly. You will find them under Settings > Plan, on the "One Good Deed Pro" card. The amount you actually pay follows the pricing for the country or region of your Apple Account, so please check the price shown in the app.
I purchased Pro but it is not active
Try "Restore purchases" in the app. You need to be signed in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you used to purchase. If it still does not activate, please contact us at the address above.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Cancellation is handled by the App Store. Open Settings > your name > Subscriptions, select One Good Deed, and choose "Cancel Subscription". The "Manage subscription" link inside the app opens the same screen.
After cancelling you keep Pro features until the end of the period you have already paid for. Partial refunds are not issued.
How do I check my renewal date?
The same Settings > your name > Subscriptions screen shows your next renewal date and amount. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends.
Can I switch between monthly and yearly?
Yes. On the same Settings > your name > Subscriptions screen, select One Good Deed and change the plan.
I would like a refund
Payments are handled by Apple, and refund decisions are Apple's. Please apply at reportaproblem.apple.com. We are unable to process refunds ourselves.
